Stay the course: 3 ways to focus on a challenge

by Sara Marchessault

It’s February 21st and 2014 is in full swing! In the midst of your start of the year goal setting, have you added any new challenges to your plate?

And the real question is are you still excited about your new challenge?

Or even an old challenge that you’d like to clear off your plate?

One of the downsides to having goals and aspirations is how easy it is to get off track. Goodness knows we have loads of stuff to distract us. What challenges are you working on?

In fact, I bet you could list five things that distract you right now. Things that keep you from moving forward to reach you goals – or stay focused on your challenges.

What can you do?

Here are three of my all-time favorite ways to stay focused on a challenge.

The first is to keep a simple reminder posted somewhere that you can see it. A Post-It note with your challenge or an inspiring quote can stick to your bathroom mirror or your steering wheel. This works because it helps you to keep your ideas front and center and fresh on your mind.

Another technique is to set a daily alarm on your cell phone. This is really helpful for developing a habit. If you set a recurring reminder at the same time everyday, you’ll be reminded of what you said you wanted to achieve and take some action to work on it.

The last technique for you today is – you probably guessed it – keeping a journal! Your journal can serve as a means to remind you of what you are out to accomplish. It can be a place for you to record your process of moving forward and to sort through the hiccups that come up along the way.

How about you? What works to keep you excited about a challenge?
